Heart Attack Symptoms in Women Over 60

Women over 60 may also experience symptoms that differ from what is typically associated with a heart attack in men, so it’s important to understand some of the more subtle issues that can occur. At Southern Maryland Medical Group, we care about our patients’ heart health, and we want to help local clients understand the warning signs. Keep reading to learn more about the most common heart attack symptoms, so you can be prepared for an emergency.

Chest Pain and Discomfort

A heart attack happens when part of your heart muscle becomes blocked by an area of plaque buildup, cutting off the blood supply to that area and causing tissue damage. When this happens, it causes chest pain or discomfort that can last several minutes or longer. It can feel like tightness or pressure on the chest, often accompanied by a squeezing feeling. It can also feel like indigestion or heartburn. If you experience chest pain lasting more than a few minutes, get medical help immediately.

Cold Sweats

A cold sweat may feel like an abrupt change in temperature and/or humidity. You may feel chilled or experience goosebumps. They’re characterized by clammy skin and may come on suddenly or gradually. This can be a sign that your body is in distress, meaning you should seek medical attention right away.

Jaw, Neck and Back Pain

If you’re having pain in your jaw, neck, or back after eating a fatty meal or becoming stressed, it’s possible that you are suffering from heartburn. However, if the pain is intense and lasts for over 15 minutes after any of these events occur, then you should seek medical care.

Severe Fatigue

Extreme fatigue is another symptom of a heart attack that can be difficult to identify. Most people know that they’re tired if they work out or exercise, but if you are experiencing extreme exhaustion after minimal exertion, it may be a sign that something is wrong with your heart.

Nausea, Vomiting, or Indigestion

You may experience nausea, vomiting, or indigestion that come on suddenly. For some women, these symptoms may be attributed to something else, such as gastritis. However, if you notice this same pattern of symptoms persist for more than an hour after eating or later in the day when you are not eating at all, then it could be something more serious.

Difficulty Breathing

Shortness of breath is a common symptom of a heart attack. However, it can also be caused by other conditions, such as asthma or pneumonia. If you experience difficulty breathing with light movements or while at rest, you may need to seek medical attention.

Dizziness and Lightheadedness

Lightheadedness is often described as feeling like you’re about to faint or pass out. Dizziness might make you feel like you’re spinning around, or your vision is blurry. Sometimes, it can feel like your ears are ringing or you’re going deaf. These symptoms are similar to those that accompany anxiety attacks, so if you’re experiencing it, see a doctor to determine the cause.

Are You Concerned About Your Heart Health?

If you are concerned about the health of your heart, the first step is to talk to your doctor. They will give you a better idea of how much risk you may have for a heart attack and what steps can be taken to reduce that risk. The specialists at Southern Maryland Medical Group offer a variety of services that can diagnose and treat conditions that affect the heart. However, if you’re experiencing the acute symptoms listed above, it’s important to seek emergency medical care right away.
