Pap Smear

Cervical cancer claims 4,000 lives every year in the United States, but it can be detected early on with a pap smear. This screening services involves collecting cells from the cervix, which is the lower, narrow end of your uterus. A pap smear can detect changes in the cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. We generally recommend a pap smear once every three years for women aged 21 to 65. Certain risk factors will affect this recommendation, with more frequent pap smears recommended for those with:

Screening Services
  • A diagnosis of cervical cancer
  • A pap smear indicating precancerous cells
  • An HIV infection
  • A weakened immune system
  • A history of smoking

The general consensus is that you can consider stopping pap testing around age 65 if previous tests for cervical cancer have been consistently negative.
